Prof. Dr. Thomas Friedrich Wilhelm Neuhann – A Visionary in Ophthalmology

With an illustrious career spanning decades, Prof. Dr. Thomas Friedrich Wilhelm Neuhann has been at the forefront of ophthalmology, pioneering groundbreaking advancements in laser eye surgery and corneal transplantation. A globally recognized leader in refractive and cataract surgery, he has dedicated his life to restoring and enhancing vision, leaving an indelible mark on the field of ophthalmology.

Prof. Neuhann’s journey with Excimer laser technology began at a very early stage, making him one of the earliest adopters of laser eye surgery. Since the late 1980s, he has performed thousands of successful laser procedures, significantly improving the lives of countless patients. His expertise and commitment to innovation earned him the prestigious title of “Pioneer of Refractive Surgery” in the United States in 1999, solidifying his place among the most esteemed ophthalmic surgeons in the world.

His contributions to ophthalmology extend beyond surgical excellence. In 2005, Prof. Neuhann was recognized among the “TOP 50 Opinion Leaders” for his Outstanding Contribution and Leadership in the fields of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. As a highly respected figure in the global ophthalmic community, he continues to influence and shape the future of vision correction techniques.

Since 2006, Prof. Neuhann has served as the President of VSDAR (Organization of German Specialty Clinics for Laser Eye and Refractive Surgery), further strengthening his leadership in the field. His role in this prestigious organization reflects his dedication to maintaining the highest standards in laser and refractive surgery across Germany and beyond.

Currently, Prof. Neuhann is an integral part of the eye clinic in Munich, where he works alongside esteemed colleagues in a renowned ophthalmological practice. Additionally, he serves as an attending physician at the eye department of the Red Cross Clinic in Munich, where he continues to provide exceptional care to his patients.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Friedrich Wilhelm Neuhann's research focuses on advanced refractive and cataract surgery, corneal transplantation techniques, Excimer laser applications, and innovative approaches in vision correction. His work also extends to the development of corneal banking and transplantation protocols, ensuring high-quality donor corneas for patients worldwide. His contributions aim to enhance surgical precision, improve patient outcomes, and advance the future of ophthalmology.

In 2004 Hr. Dr. Bauer was one of the first eye surgeons to introduce the Femto LASIK Technology. Due to his extensive experience, he is a consultant of the Commission for Refractive Surgery in Germany for the training of ophthalmologists in refractive surgery. Dr. med. Bauer is one of the first refractive surgeons to be certified after LASIK TÜV. He is also a speaker at conferences of the German Ophthalmic Surgeons and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. The process of collagen cross-linking in the treatment of keratoconus was performed and established by him in 2006 – the first time in Munich.

Ophthalmology

Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, was named Newsweek’s best ophthalmologist in the country in 2023, 2022 and 2021 on Newsweek’s list of top eye doctors in the United States. He received a near perfect score for quality of care, continuity of care, and the quality of the technology used in his practice. Dr. Donnenfeld was also named on Ophthalmology Management’s 25 Leaders in Innovation, and on The Ophthalmologist’s Power List in 2018 and 2022.

Surgical innovations in cataract surgery

Dr. Park is a board certified ophthalmologist by Korean Ophthalmology Society. He is the Chairman of Department of Ophthalmology, Dongguk University Hospital, South Korea. He graduated Seoul National University, College of Medicine and completed PhD at Samsung Medical Center, Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul. He investigated adenovirus mediated intraocular gene delivery during his post-doc period at Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University, US. His area of expertise is cataract surgery, corneal surgery and refractive surgery. His clinical research interest includes optimizing refractive outcome after multifocal intraocular lens, corneal crosslinking, novel pterygium surgery, and acanthamoeba keratitis.

Andrzej Grzybowski, M.D., Ph.D., MBA, is a Professor of Ophthalmology and Chair of Department of Ophthalmology, University of Warmia and Mazury, Olsztyn, Poland; Head of Institute for Research in Ophthalmology, Foundation for Ophthalmology Development, Poznan, Poland. He is active in international scientific societies including Euretina (Co-opted Board member 2016-2018), Retina Society, AAO, EVER, ESCRS, and ISRS, ISBCS, International Council of Ophthalmology, and Cogan Society. He became lifelong member (chair LIV) of the European Academy of Ophthalmology and is a member of Ophthalmic Education Consortium (OEC) advisory committee of Ophthalmology Foundation. He has been active contributor to major ophthalmic conferences worldwide, including AAO, APAO, WCO, CCOS, Euretina, ESCRS, EVER, ISOPT, etc. As the only Polish ophthalmologist he was included in TOP 2% ranking of world-best scientists prepared by Stanford University for 2019 and 2020. Expertscape worldwide ranking: No 1 in cataract field and No 1 in cataract extraction field. In 2021, he received ISRS (International Society for Refractive Surgery) Founders’ Award, and published a book Artificial Intelligence in Ophthalmology (Springer). In 2022 he was awarded OFFICERS' CROSS OF THE ORDER OF POLONIA RESTITUTA for outstanding achievements in research and teaching, and support for international scientific cooperation by President of Poland.

Ophthalmology

Dr. Javier Zarranz-Ventura obtained his medical degree at Universidad de Navarra, specialist training in ophthalmology at Clínica Universidad de Navarra, and a PhD in medicine at Universidad de Navarra, awarded cum laude with European mention. He underwent a fellowship in medical retina and uveitis at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and two fellowships in vitreoretinal surgery in Gloucestershire and Bristol (2011-2014). He has been working as a vitreoretinal surgeon at the Institut Clínic d'Oftalmologia (ICOF), Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, and Hospital Universitari Sagrat Cor in Barcelona since May 2014. His main clinical and research interests are age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic eye disease, and vitreoretinal surgery, as well as retinal imaging techniques, particularly OCT and OCT-A, and Artificial Intelligence. He is member of numerous scientific societies such as EURETINA, BEAVRS, ARVO and the Spanish Society of Retina and Vitreous (SERV). Dr. Zarranz-Ventura has authored >250 scientific communications, >75 scientific papers, >35 book chapters, and 3 books, and has given >160 invited lectures. He has a H-index of 20, an i10-index of 37, and has >1600 citations.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic eye disease, and vitreoretinal surgery, as well as retinal imaging techniques, particularly OCT and OCT-A, and Artificial Intelligence.

Dr Papageorgiou is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon, specialized in pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus and neuroophthalmology at the University Hospital of Larissa Greece. She graduated from the Medical School of the Aristoteles University Thessaloniki Greece, and subsequently completed a PhD in Neuroscience-Neuroophthalmology at the University of Tuebingen, Germany, funded by a Marie-Curie EU-Programme. Dr Papageorgiou has completed her specialist training in Ophthalmology at the Centre for Ophthalmology, University of Tuebingen, and then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at the University of Leicester, UK. Her practice focuses on the management of primary, secondary and tertiary care of patients with strabismus and ocular motor disorders, as well as general paediatric ophthalmology. She is active in resident training and is also involved in student education. Her research focuses on amblyopia management, pediatric ocular imaging, driving with visual field deficits and ocular manifestations of neurological disease. In 2014 she became an Associate Editor, and in 2020 a Senior Editorial Board Member for BMC Ophthalmology.

Pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus and neuroophthalmology

Dr Koh completed her undergraduate medical training at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore in 2012, where she graduated with Bachelor degrees in Medicine and Surgery, and was placed on the Dean’s list in 2009-2011. During her undergraduate days, she underwent a medical elective under Prof. Albert S. Jun at Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore, USA) in 2011. She was subsequently a recipient of the Ministry of Health Training Award for the Ophthalmology Residency programme, and underwent postgraduate training in Ophthalmology, where she was awarded the Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) from National University of Singapore in 2017, and successfully completed her Ophthalmology specialist exit examination in 2019. She is also currently a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) as of 2019. Dr Koh is active in clinical research, having presented in Ophthalmology conferences both locally and internationally, as well as published scientific papers in multiple peer-reviewed international Ophthalmology journals. She is also involved in community service and participated in various projects locally and in the region. Dr Koh is active in education and teaching, and she has served as both chief resident and chief senior resident during her residency. Currently, she is an appointed Clinical Tutor with Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore.

Cataracts and general ophthalmology.

Matthew J. Martin is a distinguished board member at Ferris State University, USA. With a career marked by significant contributions to optometry, he is a Fellow of the Orthokeratology Academy of America. He also served as a retired board member of the Orthokeratology Academy and plays an active role on the Fellowship Committee of the International Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control. His leadership and expertise have been instrumental in advancing the field of orthokeratology and myopia management

His pioneering work spans the development of advanced prosthetic solutions and specialized contactology, with a particular emphasis on enhancing visual performance for professionals in aviation. Sergio’s expertise has made him a key figure in both eye health innovation and vision training for high-performance fields.

Dr. Greiner, holder of three doctoral degrees, is an ophthalmologist, physician and surgeon, optometrist, teacher and medical research scientist, who has authored over 150 publications in the scientific and medical literature, and holds six U.S. patents and corresponding foreign patents in the areas of treatment of dry eyes and the integument (skin). With extensive training as both a basic and clinical scientist, many of these publications integrate both basic sciences and clinical medicine. In his 30 years of biomedical research, Dr. Greiner has presented more than 175 scientific papers at over 110 domestic and foreign meetings. Dr. Greiner is devoted to both scientific and clinical medical research as well as to clinical medicine in the fields of ophthalmology and surgery.
